The Quebec Self-Employed category

Under the Quebec immigration regulations, the self-employed is defined as an individual with intent to create employment for himself in any profession indicated in the National Occupational Classification.

The self-employed is subject to a selection grid based on the following criteria:

1.    Training
2.    Experience (2 years minimum as a self-employed)
3.    Age
4.    Proficiency in French and English
5.    Stay and family in Quebec
6.    Characteristics of the spouse or the de-facto spouse
7.    Financial self-sufficiency
8.    Adaptability
9.    Financial resources (Minimum $100,000.00)

The candidate with regulated trades or professions must obtain accreditation from a regulated body in Quebec.

The unmarried candidate must obtain 35 points at the preliminary assessment. The married candidate must reach a minimum of 47 points at this level.

Once approved at the preliminary level, the self-employed is called for an interview. The CAQ is usually issued after receiving 47 points for the single applicant and 56 points for the married candidate.
The application is submitted in Hong Kong or in Montreal.

Once the CAQ is issued, the applicant and his family members will proceed for the federal application for permanent residence in order to finalize the security and medical clearance.
